Pollie-winning pig brings in voters for the Humane Society of the United States

During the 2006 election cycle, the Humane Society of the United States sponsored Arizona's Proposition 204, which would require that pigs and calves be housed in decent conditions. The measure, aimed at factory farming operations which keep animals in truly horrific conditions, prevailed despite being heavily outspent by the opposition. One of the priorities of this campaign was to ensure that pro-animal protection people made it to the polls. Some initial work showed that there was a real risk of the base missing the election.

This mailing was designed to recruit Humane Society members for vote-by-mail while emphasizing the urgency of Prop. 204. It also brought a different "feel" to a discussion dominated by extremely earnest media.

Our pig had good reason to be happy: Prop. 204 passed, 62% to 38%.
