Google Maps Meets Pizza Delivery

When Google launched the My Maps feature in 2007, they allowed anybody with a Google account and a little bit of patience to share their creation with the world. Organizations from Save the Elephants to the U.S. NOAA have used Google Maps to educate and communicate. Portland, Oregon based Hot Lips Pizza uses My Maps a little differently: to show their delivery areas on a public map overlay.

This map uses the “shape” and “placemark” features of Google Maps, and could be built from inside the familiar Google Maps interface. Interestingly, the map is credited to David Yudkin (co-owner of Hot Lips Pizza and Hot Lips Soda), rather than to a design team. With My Maps, interactive maps with overlays, placemarks with associated data, and other features that would have required a dedicated developer just a few years ago can now be built by anyone in a few hours.
